Once, deep in his cups, Aegon told her that her muddy head seemed very much to him akin to his head when he was drunk. She pondered this, in her quiet way, but decided no, not the same at all. He had never foretold a thing and more often than not couldn’t remember the next day what waking dreams he’d dreamt. And would growl and strike out if she asked him about the things he’d seen the night before.
It mattered little to her. She had her babes, her ladies in waiting, and her dreams. These things belonged to her.
It wasn’t the rats that had chilled her with fear. Poor creatures. It was the men who scurried and fumbled about in the dark below their feet, while they slept safe and sound in their beds. These men threatened that safety. That soundness. They rose up out of the floors in her dreamings. And set the traps that caught the beasties. She’d seen one rat stomped to death by some offal called Cheese and if only her grandfather was still alive, that subhuman would find his own ending beneath the boot of a Kings Guard. She knew enough about her own self to know that she would be like the cowering rodent.
